Cake Decorating with Gumpaste Figures Will Add Style to your Cake

Article by Oasis Cake and Candy Supply

Decorating: Gum paste is a superb surface to decorate, such as painted or drawn onto. Oasis always recommends practicing initially with a little piece of dried Gumpaste previous to making the finishing piece(s). We have realized that the thinner it is, the ample elegant it looks after decorating. “Glue” dried pieces may be attached together with egg whites or royal frosting for larger cake decorations.

When originally with Gum paste, smooth out the wrinkles or lines on its surface to be decorated with. It can be accomplished using small amount of moisture and your finger or other tool. If you require to flat it to some extent after it has dried, service a piece of sandpaper or a sharp knife to scrap off the surface.

Be aware while handling the painted pieces as so may inadvertently transfer some color to other parts. When the paint has dried, cover using fresh piece of plastic wrap, store in resealable plastic bags or place in Tupperware containers to provide protection. Many cake decorators use this technique.

To Paint: Gumpaste shapes may be painted with paste coloring before or after drying. (If not meant for being eaten or won’t touch food, you can spray pieces with acrylic lacquer). To prepare colors for painting, use a sparkling toothpick to obtain some paste color and put inside a plastic lid, small bowl or plate. Sprinkle a number of drops of fluid on top of the lid and blend it and then fluid jointly. Some choose to dilute the colors by mixing them with vodka or gin rather than water to “water” them down. Liquor evaporates more quickly than water, allowing you to color more slowly before the surface “gums up” from your moisture inside the paint. Don’t use rum, for example because it includes sugar, defeating the quick evaporation.

Try out by trying your color on your practice gum paste piece and adjust it until you get the texture you require. The “runnier” the color is the more likely it will run out of a area you are painting. The thicker the color, the easier it will be to lay down however it also will be darker. Cautiously scrap off any mistakes using sharp knife after the coloring has dried slightly. Some things to note: When painting the outline inside black or any coloring tends to keep the colors separated even if it is not especially thick. For those who do not like the effect of the black line around your figures or design, try a light pencil so that you can “butt” one color up to the other with no the black line separating them. If painting multiple colors, the first one needs to be somewhat dry before you can attempt the next coloring, or one may bleed into the other.
